A Review of the Latest Plastic Ban Policies.

Plastic, a successful invention in human history, has both facilitated people's lives and caused numerous problems. To address the issue of excessive plastic waste, many regions are actively implementing "plastic ban" and "plastic restriction" policies.

Australia

Starting next month, South Australia and Western Australia will be expanding their ban on single-use plastic products, including more daily necessities. Effective from September 1, 2024, South Australia will prohibit the use of fruit bags, supermarket plastic bags, disposable food containers, and bread seal labels. These items will need to be replaced with degradable or reusable alternatives. This ban builds upon previous restrictions on plastic bowls, cotton swabs, and pizza protectors. South Australia Deputy Premier Susan Close emphasized the long-term objective of encouraging people to minimize the use of single-use plastic items and promote reusability.

Cafes and businesses are actively cooperating with the policy change, with some already using biodegradable cups and offering discounts to customers who bring their own reusable cups.
Cafe owner Luke Haloran stated that his shop is fully prepared for the upcoming ban. They have already switched to using wooden cutlery, biodegradable napkins, and cups and packaging made from plants, ensuring compliance with the new regulations set to take effect in September. Non-compliant businesses will face fines for not adhering to the new rules.

Russia has announced plans to gradually phase out the use of single-use plastic packaging and products starting in 2025. The government aims to replace non-degradable plastic with environmentally friendly 100% degradable materials. This policy demonstrates Russia's active promotion of the plastic ban and its commitment to achieving this goal in the coming years.

Jamaica

Jamaica has recently introduced amendments to the Trade (Prohibition of Plastic Packaging Materials) Order 2024. These amendments include an updated definition of "single-use plastics" to now include plastic food containers made from polyethylene, polypropylene, or polylactic acid. The use of such containers is now prohibited in Jamaica.

It is important to note that the regulation in Jamaica regarding the prohibition of plastic food containers has certain exceptions. Plastic food containers imported before July 11, 2024, and products distributed before January 9, 2025, are not subject to this regulation. Additionally, cosmetics or personal care products that intentionally contain plastic microbeads or microplastics and are imported before July 1, 2025, are temporarily exempt from this regulation.

Taiwan, China

Starting from September this year, beverage stores in 22 counties and cities in Taiwan will no longer provide disposable plastic beverage cups. This initiative is expected to reduce approximately 790 million plastic cups annually. Taiwan's environmental department is also considering expanding subsidies for professional baseball events and introducing circulating cups in closed fields. This will allow people who have never used circulating cups to experience the borrowing service and develop the habit of using them. Currently, out of 15 brand operators in Taiwan's chain convenience stores and fast food restaurants, 1,763 stores (12% of the total) provide recyclable cups, offering around 198,000 circulating cups for loan.

As policies in various regions continue to tighten, traditional plastic products are facing increasing restrictions. It is important to choose new green alternative products and opt for biodegradable options like sugar cane pulp tableware. By embracing these eco-friendly alternatives, we can actively practice a green lifestyle and take collective action towards a more sustainable future.
